Maya Niksic, Leadership Coach

Your journey is extraordinary. How did your path from Belgrade to Wall Street and beyond lead to the creation of the Adaptive Leadership Atelier?

I often think of life as a series of thresholds. Crossing from one world into another, we carry fragments of the past even as we embrace the unknown. I was born in Belgrade, a city that knows the weight of history yet pulses with resilience. My early years were shaped by the rhythms of a conflict zone, a daily lesson in navigating uncertainty. Later, on Wall Street in 2008, I found myself in another epicenter of chaos, witnessing the global financial collapse unfold from the iconic 85 Broad Street in New York City's historic Financial District.

But my purpose didn't crystallize in Manhattan's skyscrapers. It emerged in Omaha, Nebraska, in the intimacy of a dressing room. As a Lead Fashion Stylist at Ann Taylor, I witnessed women reclaim their confidence, transforming not just through the fabric but through the rediscovery of themselves.

In 2020, during the global lockdowns, I found the stillness I didn't know I needed. That year of solitude became a crucible, and what emerged was clear: the Atelier would be a space where leadership and artistry converge, a sanctuary for those navigating life's most complex thresholds.

What is the philosophy behind the Adaptive Leadership Atelier?

At its heart, the Adaptive Leadership Atelier is about shaping leaders who are as much artisans as strategists. It's a sanctuary for transformation, where leadership is treated as an art form, deliberate, intentional, and deeply human.

We guide leaders to navigate complexity with radical freedom, fierce compassion, and vulnerability. Drawing from the adaptive leadership principles I learned under Professor Ronald Heifetz at Harvard, we integrate ICF-style coaching, restorative yoga, dharma teachings, and Compassionate Inquiry into our work. This isn't leadership as a buzzword; it's leadership as a way of being, a process of becoming.

Our clients come from diverse walks of life, including doctors, activists, public servants, artists, and entrepreneurs. Still, they all share a common thread: the courage to embrace their multitudes and craft something extraordinary from the paradoxes of their lives.

The term 'atelier' immediately evokes the world of haute couture and artistic mystery. Why the term 'atelier'? What does it symbolize for your leadership consultancy?

The choice of the term "atelier" wasn't accidental. In haute couture, an atelier isn't just a workspace. It's a sanctuary of transformation where raw materials are meticulously crafted into something timeless. My journey began in fashion, where I witnessed firsthand how the perfect cut of fabric or the fitting silhouette could help someone step into their full embodiment and presence, owning their power.

An atelier is a sacred space where raw materials transform into timeless art. Leadership, I realized, is no different. At the Adaptive Leadership Atelier, we approach transformation as artisans of human potential. Each client's journey is bespoke, reflecting their unique complexity. The word 'atelier' honors this deeply personal and creative process, bridging the lessons I learned in fashion with the principles of adaptive leadership.

This framing evokes both the intimacy of creation and the messiness of transformation.

Our work honors the sacred ground of every leader's path.

Your brand seems to weave together the paradoxes of corporate rigor, ancient practices, and modern leadership theory. How do you hold these worlds together?

I think of it as designing a couture gown. Structure the clean lines of tailoring provides the foundation, while flow introduces movement and grace. Leadership thrives in this tension between opposites.

At the Adaptive Leadership Atelier, we balance these tensions with improvisation. The structured principles of Harvard's adaptive leadership framework provide the foundation, while somatic practices weave in the fluidity and depth that leadership demands in modern contexts. This harmony allows leaders to respond to complexity and thrive within it by finding ground.

Even visually, this philosophy extends to our brand. Every detail is curated to evoke both gravitas and lightness, embodying the paradoxes we hold.

Your services are inspired by luxury fashion collections. What sets the Atelier apart from other leadership development programs, and how are these offerings structured to reflect your unique philosophy?

Our services are curated like a couture collection, intentional, elegant, and deeply transformative. Each offering reflects the ethos of the Adaptive Leadership Atelier. The Haute Couture Experience is our most bespoke line, crafted for leaders who seek profound personal and professional transformation. This immersive journey honors the individuality of each client, creating a deeply tailored process to meet their unique challenges and aspirations. The Silhouette Collection offers precision interventions, focusing on specific leadership challenges with clarity and intentionality. For those seeking to unravel deeper layers of growth, the Jacquard Loom Collection delves into trauma-informed practices like Compassionate Inquiry, providing a space for healing and integration that supports leaders in developing resilience. Finally, our Ensemble Collection focuses on the dynamics of collaboration, fostering group learning and team leadership through the art of working together.

Each line reflects the ethos of the Atelier: leadership as art, approached with improvisation, playfulness, and curiosity. Whether working one-on-one or within a group, every client's journey is designed to embody transformation, like a couture garment crafted uniquely for them.

What are the biggest challenges leaders face today, and how does the Atelier help them navigate these complexities?

Leaders today are navigating a relentless tide of adaptive challenges and problems without straightforward solutions that demand creativity, resilience, and the ability to hold competing truths. These challenges often involve uncertainty, systemic inequities, and the need for transformation on personal, organizational, and collective levels.

At the Adaptive Leadership Atelier, we help leaders develop diagnostic integrity and the capacity to discern technical challenges from adaptive ones, which require deeper exploration and approach. We equip them with the tools to reimagine possibilities and thrive in complexity.

Transformation begins with small yet profound shifts in mindset. Shadows and past experiences, often seen as obstacles, can become sources of wisdom and strength.

Your brand is expanding beyond traditional leadership development. What's your vision for the future of the Atelier?

The Adaptive Leadership Atelier is evolving into what I see as a complete leadership lifestyle brand, a space where artistry and leadership converge. Imagine a collaborative hub where artists, musicians, designers, and leaders co-create transformative experiences. We're working on building communities of practice, digital courses, reflective journals, and coaching oracle cards designed to blend beauty with utility, making leadership development an artistic and collective learning process.

Think of it as curating a leadership wardrobe, each piece crafted to express one's unique expression, creating a cohesive narrative of resilience, creativity, and presence. This vision reflects our commitment to making transformation accessible, beautiful, and inevitable.

At the Adaptive Leadership Atelier, creativity infuses everything we do. Creativity is central to leadership, as tailoring is to fashion. Without it, leadership lacks depth and dimension. Creativity allows leaders to imagine possibilities beyond the obvious and step into realms of the invisible world.

The Atelier has a distinct way of speaking about leadership that feels both poetic and practical. How did you develop this voice?

Our voice emerged from my Serbian heritage, where names carry power and meaning, combined with my love of languages and poetry. We speak in the language of transformation using metaphors of fashion, nature, mythology, and ancient wisdom to illuminate modern leadership challenges. It's about making complex concepts not just accessible but provoking.

This voice isn't just about storytelling; it's about beauty. It's about turning narrative into art where challenging headlines become opportunities for growth, and paradoxes become bridges to previously ungraspable possibilities.

What advice would you offer to aspiring leaders and entrepreneurs?

Embrace your contradictions. Leadership isn’t about resolving paradoxes. It’s about thriving within them. The tension between strength and vulnerability, action and stillness, is where transformation takes root.

Don’t let fear of uncertainty hold you back. Often, the cost of inaction outweighs the risk of trying. Take the leap, even when the path is unclear. Growth isn’t a destination; it’s a journey to becoming.

In closing, I would like to share one of my favorite quotes from Rainer Maria Rilke:

“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves, like locked rooms and like books that are now written in a very foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers which cannot be given you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing it, live along some distant day into the answer.”

Step into the world of the Adaptive Leadership Atelier. We invite you to step across the threshold into the Adaptive Leadership Atelier, a sanctuary where life, leadership, and legacy converge. Transformation begins here not with answers but with courageous questions, and beauty dances with the profound complexity of becoming.
