You know those daydreams that take you away from your day-to-day life? What if they weren’t daydreams but glimmers of the life you could, or should, be living? What if the nagging dream that has been popping up in your mind for years, the one you keep pushing to the background because “you could never actually do that”, was the very thing you should be moving toward instead of shying away from? The harder you have to fight to push that dream away is a true sign it is meant for you. Here’s why.

Why some things might feel “hard” right now for you

Whatever job you’re in right now, if it feels hard, heavy, like every single day is a struggle, draining your energy, it’s usually a sign that you’re out of alignment with your purpose.

We were all put on this planet with a purpose. Whether you believe it or not, there’s something special you have that needs to be shared with the world. It’s usually something that can be used for the greater good.

Maybe you have a knack for finding unusual gifts for people, maybe you just 'love' fashion and all your friends come to you for advice, maybe you’ve always loved taking pictures and people often compliment your photos, or maybe you’re always the trip organiser in your group of friends and love planning. Whatever it is, these are true signs of some of your unique gifts.

Sadly, the majority of people never discover this. An article by Old Colony Hospice outlined the top five regrets of those on their deathbeds. The number one regret is not having the courage to live a life true to themselves and fulfil their dreams. This, for me, is truly heartbreaking, and I don’t want to end my days like that, and frankly, neither should you.

How to know if it's a daydream or a glimpse of your life’s purpose

The things that are meant for you will feel light and easy to do. They will give you energy, make you feel happier, and you will find yourself talking about them all day if someone asks you about it. You might even lose track of time when you’re in them, and no, this does not include the “doom scroll”. I’m talking about that feeling of time evaporating, being totally present and focused on the task at hand, some might call it “flow.” This is a pure sign that you’re doing something that lights you up inside. Pixar’s film Soul shows the feeling of flow and finding your soul’s purpose so beautifully.

In contrast, when you’re doing something that is not meant for you, you’ll feel tired, drained of energy, and plagued by the dreaded Sunday Scaries. You’ll feel like things are harder than they need to be, and you’ll likely be “moaning” about it in one form or another. If someone asks you how it’s going, you’ll probably brush it off, because spending another second talking about it bores you. The Gallup State of the Global Workplace 2025 report shows that 79% of the global workforce is either disengaged or actively disengaged at work. This shows us just how few people are currently working in an area they feel passionate about.

I’ve uncovered my purpose, now what?

When you uncover your unique gift, your purpose, your reason for being here, whatever that is, and start to actually pursue it, I truly believe your whole world begins to light up around you. You feel lighter and happier, you radiate with this “glow” that people start to notice, and things begin to fall into place for you as if by magic (the universe might have a hand in this). Even relationships around you will grow stronger. If you haven’t already, I would highly recommend reading "Ikigai", which was the first book I read on my self-development journey and the one that kick-started my path to finding my purpose. But here’s my shortened version!

5 steps to uncover your life’s purpose

1. Pay attention

Pay attention to the things people compliment you on or always ask for your help with. Particularly if the thing feels easy or like “common sense” to you, this is a sure sign that it’s a talent or gift of yours. Write them down somewhere you can reflect back on.

2. Get curious

Start getting curious about the things you love to do and that give you energy. Think about the topics that, if brought up at the dinner table, would have you talking passionately for hours. If you don’t know what they are yet (or maybe you’ve just forgotten), try something new, something that may have caught your eye a few times, a new hobby, a dance class. Pay attention to the articles and influencers you are drawn to. What attracts you is usually a reflection of what is going on inside you (you attract what you are, remember!).

3. Get nostalgic

Think back to your childhood and the things you loved to do then. Maybe you were always performing in assembly (this was me!) or reading books out to the class (also me), which were sure signs that I was a born leader and loved to teach and coach. These were signs that later led me to my purpose as a coach and speaker. You can even look back at old jobs and reflect on which parts you thrived in, as they can direct you toward the path of your purpose. Usually, all your past jobs have been teaching you some sort of skill you would need in fulfilling your life’s purpose. Life is always happening for you.

4. Listen to the daydream

Pay attention to your daydreams, especially the recurring ones. Those visions that take you off to another world, where you feel free, in flow, and excited about life. Where are you? Who are you with? What life do you imagine yourself living if fear or money didn’t exist?

5. Take action

Listen to that recurring thought or idea that keeps popping up and 'take action' on it. Start moving in alignment with it. You don’t need to have it all figured out at the start. Don’t let the thought of a complete life overhaul put you off. Break down your purpose into the smallest of actions, something that can be done in under 30 minutes (ideally in 10). A manageable first step. When you’ve reached that, it will kick-start your motivation and allow you to feel excited to take the next step. One step forward at a time is all we need.

Safety is the only thing holding you back right now

We’re instinctively drawn to safety, to what we already know, and to money (which is where the logical mind takes us). But all of that is a distraction from what we actually want and what we’re truly here to do, to leave an impact and a legacy on this earth.

Not just to work and live in a place or job that drains the energy out of us until we retire, only to finally start living life when it’s too late, and then eventually die, leaving all our dreams behind.

Let this life be full, exciting, passion-led, and full of purpose, a life that lights you up from the core and one you’ll be proud to leave behind with no regrets. When you live that way, when you follow your passion, you create more positive energy, and the universe starts to conspire in your favour. Things will start to feel in flow, you’ll feel more aligned, confident, and things will finally start to feel “right” for you.

Tell yourself you’re capable too, you 'kann' create your dream, purpose-filled life!
