Tanner O. Campbell
Philosopher of Stoicism
Tanner Campbell is a public philosopher and Stoicism specialist based in Scotland. His work has one aim: to make orthodox Stoicism, the philosophy of Zeno, Cleanthes, Chrysippus, Epictetus, Seneca, and Marcus Aurelius, usable by people who are not academics and have no interest in becoming one.
He is the host of the Practical Stoicism podcast, which has been downloaded more than 10 million times and ranks in the top one percent of podcasts worldwide. He co-authored "What Is Stoicism? A Brief and Accessible Overview." He's also the mind behind the Pyramid of Concern, a framework for working out which of your concerns deserve your attention and which do not (an addition to the pre-existing work of Heirocles).
Tanner is the founder and director of 134 Labs Limited, through which he runs corporate workshops, private mentorship and curriculum development. His flagship workshop, Decide Like a Stoic, gives teams a structured method for making decisions they can defend afterwards, built on the Stoic account of roles and duties rather than on outcome-chasing. He also works one-on-one with a small number of private clients, including senior executives, on bespoke programmes of Stoic practice.
He writes the Stoic Brekkie newsletter weekly and built StoicJournaling.com, a twelve-month programme delivering one Stoic journaling prompt per week. Tanner also runs a free online community where members bring their questions about Stoic practice directly to him.
Before philosophy, Tanner spent years in technology, holding IT leadership roles and working as an automation engineer, and founded a podcast recording studio in Portland, Maine. That background shapes how he teaches: concrete, tested, and impatient with anything that sounds good but does not hold up in practice.
He is critical of what he calls pop-Stoicism or toxic-Stoicism, the lifestyle-brand reinterpretation that strips the philosophy of its ethics and keeps only the productivity tips, and his work is a standing argument that the original is both more demanding and more useful.
