James Matthews is the founder of DataCareer.Coach. He coaches data professionals who are technically strong but keep getting overlooked when it matters. His route into coaching wasn't conventional. James spent 25+ years at the mid-point between business and technology, across KPMG, banking and fintech, watching the same pattern repeat. The best analysts and data leads in the room were rarely the ones getting promoted. The ones who got ahead could translate their work into business language, hold their own with stakeholders, and walk into a room with presence. Technical skill got people hired. It rarely got them promoted. That observation became the foundation of DataCareer.Coach. 

James works across four pillars: commercial awareness, stakeholder influence, mental strength and leadership presence, the skills that rarely appear on a technically strong CV but decide who moves up and who stays put. He has a long-standing interest in psychology and NLP, and draws on it to help clients understand not just what to do differently but why they default to what they do now. James is also exploring fractional CDAO work with small businesses, a way to stay close to the commercial pressures and stakeholder dynamics he coaches others through. James is one of four mentors on the Data Talent Scout programme, maximising the chances of success for newly placed senior data hires. He has been featured in the press for his work on how AI is reshaping data careers, and why soft skills matter more than ever now that AI is lowering the bar for entry into technical roles. He helps clients become the most trusted person in the room, not just the smartest one in it.
