Resilience Extends Beyond Overcoming Obstacles – Interview with Fabio da Silva Fernandes

What inspired you to focus on resilience cultivation as your main area of expertise, and how do you believe it transforms people's lives?


When I initially started my wellness business, I primarily focused on mindfulness and Reiki, but I soon recognized in my clients that these holistic practices, along with many others, help people build resilience. So when I decided to create a podcast, I knew the theme needed to focus on resilience cultivation.


Over the years, I have interviewed many guests who have offered varying perspectives on resilience, and I have learned a great deal through my own research on this topic.


I align more closely with being an enthusiast of resilience than an expert because I am continually learning. That said, I am certainly demystifying resilience for the masses and challenging the standard definition.


In terms of its transformational impact, resilience is fundamental in navigating life with clarity and adaptability when problems arise. Without resilience, we would be incapable of interpreting our inner compass and discerning which direction to take to best support our well-being. In other words, resilience is closely linked to self-awareness, as well as embodying certain qualities and undertaking actions that help us move closer to overcoming adversity. To me, the transformation happens in the process, not the outcome.


How do you define true resilience, and what are the most common misconceptions people have about it?


In my current awareness and understanding, resilience is a combination of characteristics and actions that support our well-being and our desire to overcome undesirable circumstances and achieve favorable outcomes. It is also the drive to continue trying when we fall short or do not succeed. Courage and humility are essential characteristics that go hand in hand with actions like mindfulness and doing something every day that moves us forward.


The biggest misconception about resilience is that if we do not overcome adversity, we are not resilient. That is completely untrue. The reality is that there are no guarantees that we will overcome everything in life. From my standpoint, the most important work happens before a breakthrough, in that sticky period or liminal space of uncertainty, anxiety, and hard work that gets us to the next stage, whatever that might be.


What specific strategies or practices do you recommend to those looking to build emotional strength during tough times?


The first step is to acknowledge our emotions with an attitude of self-compassion. I think the tendency is to avoid difficult emotions and push them down. The irony is that when we ignore them, these emotions become compounded and can manifest as an outburst of anger. Many people are angry right now, but beneath that anger there is often hurt, pain, suffering, and fear.


Step one is acknowledgement. Step two is sitting with these difficult emotions in a mindful way to understand where they come from and their root causes. Step three is finding ways to channel this energy in a healthy way through physical activity and holistic practices like mindfulness, Reiki, and somatic work that focuses on releasing stored tension within the body. You might also consider contacting a therapist for guidance if deeper work is needed.


How does your podcast contribute to reshaping the narrative around personal challenges, and what impact do you hope to create with each episode?


I recently did a talk on the wisdom of resilience through storytelling. In simple terms, this is what my podcast is about. When we listen to stories from family, friends, and people in the broader community, it helps us build resilience because of the life lessons we learn. It does not necessarily mean that we are going to take the exact same approach that someone else took, but what we might gain from a story are the attitudes and principled approaches used to navigate adversity.


Stories are also inspirational and can ignite a desire within us to do something different for the betterment of our lives. It is also a powerful way to increase empathy and compassion for people with different lived experiences.


What role does self-compassion play in cultivating resilience, and how can individuals practice it effectively?


It can be very easy to be hard on ourselves when life gets tough or when there is a high degree of uncertainty. Self-compassion is an effective strategy for supporting resilience because it invites us to be kinder to ourselves and ease our own suffering. As I mentioned earlier, acknowledgement of our current state is very important, along with exploring practices that can improve our overall wellness.


In this case, I would suggest a loving-kindness meditation that affirms your self-worth and interconnectedness with all living things. Another recommendation is partnering with someone to share daily gratitudes. I do this regularly with a friend, where we share a list of things we are grateful for. This is an excellent way to shift our internal dialogue from critical and negative to supportive and positive. This approach can make navigating adversity much easier. To broaden your self-compassion toolkit, you might consider taking the respected research-based Mindful Self-Compassion program in your local area or online.


What is one powerful transformation you've witnessed in a client or listener who applied your teachings to their journey?


My heart is always full when clients report a decrease in stress and anxiety, along with an improved overall mood. At a recent conference, attendees described my talk on resilience cultivation as “powerful”, “beautiful”, and “touching”. Beyond the positive feedback on the material itself, several delegates noted that the presence of the delivery left a lasting impression.


I have also spoken in educational settings. In one testimonial, a professor wrote that I exceeded all expectations and that my preparation and expertise were evident throughout my resilience cultivation session. They also described it as profound and accessible, and mentioned that I brought an engaging, kind, and approachable energy to the classroom.


In general, listeners of my podcast have commented on the inspirational nature of the show. That is my intention, to share transformative stories that help people navigate life’s most turbulent moments. One listener emailed me saying, “It’s that kind of depth that makes The Stumbling Spirit so captivating.”


How do you tailor your consulting services to ensure each individual or organization feels empowered to embrace their unique resilience?


On the consulting page of my website, there are downloadable proposals that outline the essence of my offerings, which are customizable to the needs of each organization. While I no longer advertise services for individuals, I still work one-to-one with clients on an ad hoc basis.
