Do you ever feel like you're drowning in deadlines, perpetually behind, and running on a treadmill that's going nowhere fast? Yeah, me too. For the longest time, I tried to make time very real! But what if time isn’t the enemy we’re always running out of? What if time isn’t even linear? What if you could actually surf time?

Businessperson surfing a large wave on an orange board, holding a briefcase. The sky is orange, creating a vibrant, adventurous mood.

Time Surfing is the ability to consciously choose and create your future by interacting with the energy of possible timelines! It's about recognizing that time isn't a linear progression from past to present to future, but a vast, interconnected field of possibilities that you can actively shape! And I'm not talking about sci-fi teleportation or time machines. Time Surfing is a practical, tangible skill that we all possess but rarely use consciously.

Part 1: The physics of flow and time surfing

Think about those moments when you're completely absorbed in what you're doing when you're "in the zone," "in the flow," or "in the pocket." Time seems to disappear. Hours fly by in what feels like minutes.

Maybe you’re mapping out a bold idea, dancing to your favorite song, talking to someone who really, really gets you. It's in these moments that you're tapping into the true nature of time.

Scientists are now discovering that "flow state" is more than just a subjective experience. Researchers like Steven Kotler have found that flow is an "optimal state of consciousness" where the brain functions at peak performance, creativity soars, and awareness expands.

In flow, the normal constraints of time and space dissolve. Your sense of self fades away, and you become deeply connected to the task at hand. Choices become effortless, solutions appear spontaneously, and everything seems to align perfectly.

Energetically, you're surfing.

Here's the key: You can't force flow. Concentrating, trying too hard, that's the opposite of flow. It's like trying to hold water in a clenched fist. Let go, follow the energy, and allow yourself to be present.

Part 2: Rewriting the script: Change your past, change your future

This second part is even more interesting! Did you know that you can actually change your past? I'm not talking about erasing history, but changing your relationship to it.

The first step is to challenge your assumptions about the past. Most of us carry around a heavy "backpack" filled with memories, beliefs, and judgments from our past experiences. We allow these experiences to dictate our present choices and limit our future possibilities.

We basically create a whole set of presumptive futures based on our past successes and failures, and in doing that, we close every door that doesn’t fit with the past.

But what if you could rewrite the script? What if you could change your relationship to the past, without erasing the events themselves?

It all starts with changing your point of view. When you change your perspective on the past, the past itself changes not just for you, but for everyone connected to you.

So, how do you ditch the backpack? Start by asking this simple question:

"If I had no past, what would I choose right now?"

Allow every door to open, surf in!

Part 3: The power of choice: Creating a future you desire

The third key to time surfing is recognizing the power of your choices in creating the future. Every thought, word, and action sends out ripples of energy that shape the timelines ahead.

The future isn't some fixed destination, pre-determined and unchangeable. The future is energetic! It's being created today, with every choice you make, with every point of view you hold.

So, what kind of future are you choosing to create? Are you focusing on problems, limitations, and worst-case scenarios? Or are you embracing possibilities, opportunities, and the potential for something greater?

Have you ever seen the Disney movie Tomorrowland? It’s based on this intriguing premise: What if there was a device that broadcasts to the world a bleak vision of the future, and the more people who bought into this view, the more it actually created that doomsday for the future? It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, actively destroying the potential for a brighter future. What if that is, in a sense, what’s going on now? The more we focus on all that is wrong, the more energy we add to it, the worse it will be.

But the opposite is also true. What if we intentionally choose to focus on the possibilities for greater in the world (and they are everywhere!) and start making choices that create a place of ease, joy, and happiness?

Part 4: The 500-year view

For those of you who are ready to take it further, I challenge you to expand your time horizon. Instead of focusing on the next quarter, the next year, or even the next decade, consider the impact of your choices on the next 500 years.

Sounds crazy? Maybe. But when you consider that far-away point in the future, you get a different perspective on time. All the reference points about what is required disappear. You start to make choices based on what's truly sustainable, what's truly greater, what's truly aligned with your soul.

What kind of legacy do you want to leave behind? What kind of world do you want to create for future generations?

Start asking this question: What would you like your life and living on this planet to be like in 5 years? In 25 years? In 50 years? In 500 years?

Yes, I know, the last one does not make cognitive sense, and that is the whole point!

The future doesn't have the solidity to it like the present, so the choices can’t be computed cognitively. They come from this space deep within you, where you just know.

What if, starting today, you gave yourself full permission to surf time, to rewrite your past, choose your future, and enjoy the ride in the present? Because the real power isn’t in managing minutes, it’s in realizing how truly malleable every moment is!

Calls to action

  • Reflect: Take some time this week to reflect on your relationship with the past. What beliefs, judgments, and conclusions are you holding onto?

  • Experiment: Try the "If I had no past, what would I choose?" exercise and see what insights and choices arise.

  • Expand: Consider the 500-year view and how it might influence your choices!

  • Relax: Remember, your thoughts create your reality. What if your point of view was that time is always on your side?
