Dr. Tywana Robinson, Executive Leadership Strategist, Coach, Founder, and Author
Who is Dr. Tywana Robinson?
I am an executive leadership strategist and coach with more than 25 years of experience. My expertise is centered on supporting leader development, both personally and professionally, to produce greater organizational results. As a result of my military service, experience in higher education, and previous positions that required decisions affecting people, I recall several situations in which I had to figure out how to lead others. In addition to my professional background, I believe that working in challenging environments has helped me realize how important it is to maintain clarity and to rely on others.
Today, my primary focus is on individuals at crossroads (not necessarily indicating failure) and helping them grow. Individuals reach crossroads when they have developed to the point that their former definition of success no longer applies, and something needs to change. This emphasis helps individuals build confidence and resilience as they navigate change.
What inspired you to start Thriving Minds Learning Solutions, and how does it stand out in leadership development?
Thriving Minds Learning Solutions was formed based on my passion for lifelong learning. I have observed highly skilled, dedicated leaders who exhaust themselves because they did not believe they could pursue alternative options. They had the necessary skills, certifications, and experience; however, they lacked the mental space to clearly and honestly consider what they wanted to pursue in their next chapter. You can be incredibly competent and still profoundly misaligned. Leadership involves the courage to admit what we experience. I work with professionals struggling with leadership turbulence (whether it is uncertainty or fear), using a fresh perspective to help them change their thinking and become more self-mastered.
What sets my work apart from other approaches to leadership development is that I do not view burnout, misalignment, or transitions as weaknesses to be fixed. Rather, I view them as signals. Signals that a leader is prepared to evolve. My role is to support leaders in slowing down enough to reconnect with themselves and then moving forward with purpose rather than force.
How do you define effective leadership in today’s fast-changing organizational landscape?
Leadership is an internal journey. In fast-paced organizations, leaders do not fail for lack of knowledge. Instead, leaders struggle due to a loss of connection to their values and identity, an overwhelming amount of change around them, or their reliance on outdated definitions of success.
Effective leaders need clarity during uncertain times. Strong leaders make thoughtful decisions, communicate truthfully, and maintain their footing even when everything around them seems unstable. It is not about having all the answers, but rather about being able to lead with effectiveness even when you do not know the answer.
What are the biggest leadership challenges you help executives and teams overcome?
Burnout is the most experienced challenge I assist leaders with. Often, leaders are unaware that they are experiencing burnout; they simply feel unfulfilled in a job that once meant something to them. Leaders may not always experience physical burnout; they experience emotional burnout. Physical burnout can manifest itself in numbness, restlessness, or stagnation. I also assist leaders with transitioning: entering new roles, questioning long-held career paths, or realizing they've outgrown what used to motivate them.
Additionally, I help leaders with internal conflict. Many leaders appear confident and capable to their teams, yet internally they are plagued by self-doubt and uncertainty. This discrepancy creates a sizeable gap between a leader's outwardly expressed behaviors and inwardly felt emotions, leading to hesitation and indecision in decision-making. Leaders who are not connected to their authentic selves will experience emotional fatigue and become disconnected from their core values. I address this internal turmoil to help the leader identify and resolve the disconnect positively, enabling them to be a more genuine and effective leader. By bridging this gap, the leader's overall well-being will improve, and they will inspire their team(s).
Can you explain your signature coaching or strategy framework and how it delivers results?
The Pivot with Purpose Framework, an 8-week program, is designed for leaders at a crossroads. The framework allows leaders to pause long enough to gain clarity and evaluate what is no longer working in their lives. The framework empowers leaders to intentionally plan their next chapter without starting from scratch. A meaningful pivot is about clarity, honesty, and intention. Creating an environment of hope and opportunity enables leaders to pivot intentionally.
The framework positively affects all facets of a person's life. Clients experience enhanced relationships, greater meaning in their work, and excitement about waking up each morning. The framework includes practical exercises in five critical areas: identity exploration, building a resilience arsenal, breaking restrictive patterns, and designing a future that honors both a person's talents and growth.
What measurable outcomes have your clients seen after working with you?
Since working with me, clients have reported numerous measurable outcomes that they value greatly. These outcomes include:
More Confident Decision-Making: Many clients have reported that their decision-making has improved dramatically, with 70-80% reporting that they have more confidence in making decisions that are in line with their values and goals.
Less Burnout: Clients typically report a significantly reduced level of burnout-related symptoms, with up to 60% reporting a decrease in their feelings of exhaustion and disconnection from their work.
Overcoming Fear: Leaders typically experience an 80% increase in their ability to confront and manage fears associated with transitioning and organizational changes, resulting in a more proactive mindset.
Rethinking Their Leadership Style: After working with me, clients report a clearer and more authentic leadership style, which contributes to a 40-70% increase in team engagement and morale, as well as an improvement in feedback from team members.
Through these outcomes, clients not only achieve tangible progress but also discover a renewed sense of purpose in their roles.
How do you tailor your executive coaching programs to different industries or leaders?
While I understand that various industries exist, the human experience of leadership is consistently the same. All leaders experience pressure, accountability, self-doubt, and decision fatigue in some form. I customize my coaching services by understanding the leader's background; however, I always start with the person. Once I understand how the leader thinks, leads, and responds to pressure, everything else falls into place.
What do you believe is the most misunderstood aspect of leadership growth?
Many people believe that leadership growth is about gaining additional skills. Based on my experience, it is generally about letting go of outdated expectations, identities, or definitions of success that no longer serve a leader or their team. Growth requires honesty, self-reflection, and the willingness to change how a leader perceives themselves.
The Importance of Flexibility and Adaptability: Leadership is not a static position; it is a dynamic journey. Successful leaders recognize that flexibility helps them respond to new challenges. This adaptability will promote resilience and encourage leaders to innovate and grow.
The Value of Emotional Intelligence: Leaders often underestimate the importance of emotional intelligence in their own development. Recognizing and addressing their own and others' emotions will facilitate stronger relationships and a supportive team environment. Ultimately, this will foster collaboration and improved performance.
Redefining Success: Many leaders are limited by inflexible definitions of success that emphasize external validation over personal satisfaction or their team's well-being. By redefining success in alignment with their personal and organizational values, leaders will create a more authentic and motivational vision for themselves and their teams.
The Benefits of Being Vulnerable: The misconception that vulnerability is a weakness will limit successful leadership. However, leaders who are willing to be vulnerable will create an atmosphere of trust and authenticity with their teams. Acknowledging uncertainty will create an environment where team members will feel comfortable sharing their ideas and taking risks.
How do strategic planning and culture development tie into personal leadership success?
A leader's strategy and culture will always reflect the leader. When leaders are clear about who they are and what matters to them, their strategy will be focused and their culture intentional. When they are unclear, confusion will spread quickly. Clarity about a leader's personal identity is not separate from achieving success in their organization; it is the foundation of that success.
What makes your approach to leadership different from traditional training or consulting?
I believe that leadership development is fundamentally human and personal. I recognize the unique backgrounds and experiences of every leader. Traditional consulting sometimes offers a one-size-fits-all solution. I develop customized strategies that help leaders leverage their strengths before confronting their challenges. My approach encourages clients to think critically and lead authentically, rather than relying on generic templates. The goal is to empower clients to develop their own voice and pathway to leadership.
Can you share a success story where your guidance significantly transformed a leader or team?
I worked with a mid-career leader who had achieved significant success but felt disconnected and exhausted, and struggled to speak up for herself during counseling and performance evaluations. It is hard to find your voice in certain scenarios. The ego wants us to defend or prove ourselves professionally. Through our work, she gained clarity about what was draining her, redefined success on her own terms, and made intentional changes to how she leads her teams going forward. I learned from a mentor to advocate for myself. She has even stepped out of her comfort zone by seeking mentors in her field. A game changer! The result was renewed confidence, healthier boundaries, and a more engaged, trusting team.
What is the one key takeaway you want potential clients to remember about working with you?
You do not have to lose yourself to be a strong leader. With clarity, intention, and the courage to pivot thoughtfully, you can lead successfully. One of the most misunderstood aspects of leadership is the idea that effective leaders must always project an image of certainty and control. True leadership growth often depends on the leader's willingness to be vulnerable and to release outdated expectations, identities, and definitions of success that no longer serve them or their team. If this resonates, take a few minutes to ask yourself: what season of leadership are you currently in, and when might it be time to release so you can lead what comes next with clarity and intention?
