Clayton Fields on What It Takes to Make New Ideas Work

Technology has no shortage of big ideas, but having an idea and getting it to work inside a real business are two very different things. Clayton Fields has spent much of his career working in the space between those two points.

Based in Woodstock, Georgia, Fields is a go-to-market professional with experience across enterprise technology, security software, services, startups, and AI-enabled solutions. His work has put him in conversations with companies considering new technology and with teams trying to figure out how to bring that technology to market.


Those experiences have changed what catches his attention. Fields is still interested in new technology, but he is less impressed by what something can theoretically do than he once was. He wants to know what happens when it reaches a customer.


"You can be right about where technology is going and still be wrong about when a customer is ready for it," Fields says. "That distinction matters more than I understood earlier in my career."


A good idea still has to work in the real world


Fields spent nearly 10 years working in commercial sales for a major technology company. His work included client services, infrastructure, storage, and business applications. Being close to enterprise customers showed him that the way a technology company evaluates a product can be very different from the way a customer evaluates it.


A vendor may see a better product with stronger capabilities. The customer has to consider those capabilities alongside budgets, existing contracts, employee training, security requirements, implementation work, and other projects already competing for attention.


This taught Fields not to confuse customer interest with customer readiness. A buyer can understand the technology and believe that it would improve the business while still deciding that implementing it does not make sense right now.


"A customer can agree with almost everything you are saying and still decide not to move forward," Fields says. "Sometimes that has nothing to do with whether the technology works. You have to understand what else is happening inside that organization."


That experience became even more relevant when Fields began working with technology startups.


Startups changed how Clayton Fields thinks about decisions


Fields has spent more than 13 years working with security software and services startups. The environment was different from working inside a large, established technology company because smaller companies often had fewer resources and less historical information to guide decisions.


Teams could be developing a product while learning how customers wanted to use it. They could be refining their sales approach while discovering that the market understood the problem differently than expected. Waiting until every question had a clear answer was not always realistic.


Fields began thinking more carefully about which decisions could be reversed. If a team could test an approach, learn from customers, and change direction without creating a major problem, acting with incomplete information could make sense. Decisions involving security, trust, major commitments, or consequences that would be difficult to undo required more caution.


"If we can try something, get information from the market, and change it without creating a major problem, I am more comfortable moving," Fields says. "If the decision affects trust, security, or something that is difficult to unwind, that deserves more time."


The lesson was not simply that startups should move quickly. Fields has also seen how constant activity can create the appearance of progress without producing useful information. For him, the more important question is whether taking action will help the team learn something it does not already know.


Why strong technology can still struggle


Working with newer solutions has also made Fields cautious about assuming that a product is bad simply because customers do not immediately adopt it.


Timing can have a major influence on whether an idea gains traction. A company may have developed a useful solution to a legitimate problem, but customers may not consider that problem important enough to address yet. They may have already committed their budgets elsewhere, or an existing system may still be working well enough that replacing it does not make sense.


The situation can change without the technology changing very much.


An increase in costs can make an inefficient process harder to tolerate. Customer expectations can change. Leadership can place new attention on a problem that has existed for years. A new risk can make an existing solution feel inadequate.


"Sometimes the product does not change very much, but the customer's reason for caring changes completely," Fields says.


Fields also believes companies need to be careful about using timing as an explanation for every unsuccessful idea. There is a difference between a market that is not ready and a market that simply does not want the product.


"You have to be careful with the idea that you are just early," he says. "That can become an excuse. Sometimes customers are telling you something you need to hear."


AI shows how customer readiness can change


Fields has worked with AI-enabled solutions for about a decade. That experience has allowed him to watch artificial intelligence move from a technology that often required significant explanation to something businesses are actively asking about.


Years ago, part of the challenge could be explaining why a company should pay attention to AI in the first place. Today, organizations are often starting the conversation by asking where they should use it.


Fields sees opportunity in that change, but he also sees a risk. Interest in a technology can become so strong that companies start looking for places to use it before identifying the problem they need to solve.


He prefers to start with practical questions. He wants to know where employees are losing time, where customers are experiencing unnecessary friction, where information is difficult to access, or where an existing process is producing poor results.


"If we start with the assumption that we need AI and then go looking for somewhere to put it, I think we have the process backward," Fields says. "I would rather find the problem first."


New technology has to compete with what already works


Experience has also made Fields more appreciative of established technology. He does not believe that every business needs to replace a dependable system simply because something newer has entered the market.


Existing technology has advantages that are easy to overlook. Employees understand how to use it. Other systems may already connect to it. The company understands its limitations and has built processes around them. Replacing that technology introduces new costs and uncertainty.


At the same time, Fields does not believe familiarity should prevent a company from changing. An older system can eventually become a constraint if employees are constantly creating workarounds or if it prevents the business from meeting new expectations.


The real decision is whether the improvement offered by something new is meaningful enough to justify the disruption required to adopt it.


"Being on the cutting edge is not the goal by itself," Fields says. "The goal is making a good business decision about when something new is worth adopting."


Turning big ideas into practical decisions


Fields remains interested in emerging technology and the opportunities it can create. What has changed over his career is the way he evaluates those opportunities.


He now spends more time asking practical questions. He wants to know what problem is being solved, who feels that problem strongly enough to act, what will have to change inside the customer's organization, and what evidence would show that the original assumptions were wrong.


Those questions are not as exciting as predicting the next major technology shift, but Fields believes they are necessary if an idea is going to become useful outside the company that created it.


"An idea can be technically impressive and still not be ready for the real world," Fields says. "For me, the interesting work is figuring out what has to happen between those two points."
