I'm a small business. I've been trying to explain this to my friends, my parents, and the close community of humans around me. But it is hard to explain when the business is something that is happening in the background, at 3:00 a.m., on the weekends, between lunch breaks, during solo vacations, and after clocking out of my actual day job. Nevertheless, I am a business. My industry is friendship and community. My profits are a reduction in feelings of loneliness and hopelessness.

Don’t dream it, be it, believe it

I have always been a small business in the world of community building, in my homosexual, highly social opinion. Bringing people together has been a passion of mine since I made room at the school lunch table so that my classmates who played Pokémon cards could meet each other and obsess over the long debate about which elemental Pokémon is better, Charmander, Bulbasaur, or Squirtle. This continued through hosting horror movie nights in my 30s to introduce mutual friends to each other because they share a love of spooky stories and B-movies.

I can’t say it enough, but people who find more ways for us to connect, without costing community groups money to meet in their area, and actively make these opportunities known, are more valuable than gold. We already have so much in common. We just need to bring those commonalities into spaces where they can thrive meaningfully.

Going on this adventure of friendship

Now my business is RConnectFor. I am the founder and CEO of a community-building service and platform. We strongly believe you are absolutely right to want a friendship that feels alive. The math is on your side. Community is how we have survived moments of strife, anxiety, and even uncertain hope.

More importantly, meaningful connection is something we deserve outside of a crisis, and we deserve it even when it becomes inconvenient, because so much is trying to take our attention and time away from being together.

RConnectFor is a team of one for now, with part-time lawyers, UX designers, engineers, and videographers who occasionally show up to help build a runway to a world where people have an easier time coming together and spend less time worrying about why they don’t see their favorite people anymore.

Building a path to intentional closeness

My business is to dream up a world in which it is not rare to feel like you have someone to see and share this life with at any point in the day, week, or year. A life in which you are not the only one reaching out for connection. Active, meaningful friendship is reciprocal friendship in which everyone is reaching out to each other for companionship and closeness, ensuring that we all know how important these connections are.

A life in which you have people who will know what you mean when you say, “Do you remember when...” because they were part of that moment with you. A life with people and a community who know exactly what you are excited about when the phone rings and you just say, “Guess what?!” because they stayed up late with you preparing for the new job interview, rehearsing that script for your first Off Off Broadway play, or looking up concert tickets for your favorite band that hasn't performed in a decade.

At RConnectFor, we are working toward a world where we are fed and full from the depth of our friendships and no longer starving because of a dearth of closeness in those connections.

So, today, we’re encouraging everyone to go immediately, but not necessarily hurriedly, to your friend's house and tell them about that date, that new job, your new favorite TV show, or even that weird mole you found on your butt. Some things are worth stepping out the door and off the phone to say in person. Even food tastes better when soaked in conversation.

I am very lucky that my business is the business of friendship because, without my own core group of friends, I would not be the man that I am today. I would not know myself without that meaningful and intentional community that feels just right, like your favorite jacket that you can’t stop wearing because it shows off your best parts.

RConnectFor’s quotes of the day

“Won't you celebrate with me, what I have shaped into a kind of life? I had no model, born in Babylon both nonwhite and woman. What did I see to be except myself? I made it up, here on this bridge between starshine and clay, my one hand holding tight my other hand. Come celebrate with me that everyday something has tried to kill me and has failed.” – Lucille Clifton, “Won't you celebrate with me,” The Book of Light (1993)

“I am having a moment, and the burden of my ambition still has me wondering if I am worthy.” – Roxane Gay, “The Price of Black Ambition”
