Walter “Shump” Shumpert III is a seasoned hospitality leader with over three decades of experience spanning private clubs, restaurants, hotels, and nightclubs. A trained chef and Master of Wine & Spirits, Walter has mastered the art of creating exceptional guest experiences while building strong, purpose-driven teams.
He made history as the first African American General Manager/COO of private clubs in Illinois and Wisconsin, breaking barriers in an industry that was not built for leaders like him. His journey is a testament to resilience, excellence, and the transformative power of representation.
Today, Walter serves as a writer, consultant, and hospitality trainer, inspiring professionals to lead with purpose, inclusion, and authenticity. His upcoming book chronicles his rise through the hospitality world—from humble beginnings on Chicago’s West Side to becoming a respected voice in private club leadership.
Through his speaking platform, Shump Talks, Walter challenges audiences to reimagine leadership, diversity, and the culture of service—reminding everyone that true hospitality begins with humanity.
