Trauma Recovery Educator
Barb Varcl Smith is a Trauma Recovery Educator, Hypnotherapy Master Trainer and creator of The Ascendance Method—an educational framework that helps people understand how childhood trauma and survival adaptations shape our thoughts, emotions, relationships and lives.
Barb's work is rooted in both professional expertise and profound personal experience. Having recovered from Complex PTSD (CPTSD), navigated Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS), and lived through several near-death experiences, she came to realise that true healing required more than symptom management. Those experiences inspired a lifelong search to understand how human beings are designed to survive—and, more importantly, how they are designed to heal.
Working with adults recovering from childhood trauma, Barb recognised a common pattern: people often spend years trying to change behaviours without understanding why those behaviours developed in the first place. This insight led her to develop The Ascendance Method, a framework that shifts the narrative from "What's wrong with me?" to "How did I adapt to survive?" At the heart of her work is a simple but powerful belief: people are not broken—they adapted to survive.
Drawing on trauma-informed practice, nervous system regulation, hypnotherapy and coaching, Barb helps people understand survival adaptations, restore balance between mind, body and spirit, and reclaim their innate human potential. Rather than focusing solely on symptom relief, her work empowers people to move beyond survival into Ascendance—a life guided by inner strength, self-awareness, intuition, purpose and wisdom.
Through her articles, the Way Out of Childhood Trauma podcast, speaking engagements, educational platform and forthcoming book, Barb is leading a new conversation about trauma, resilience and human potential. Her mission reaches beyond individual healing to breaking generational cycles and changing the way the world understands recovery.
Break the Cycle. Change the Narrative. Change the World.
