Raw data- a term commonly heard in the tech and data industries- is data that comes directly from its source; it is pure, hot off the press, and unmanipulated. When someone is seeking validation of any theory, they must begin with raw data. Can we apply this to our health? If so, how? Let’s take a look.

A lot of fruits

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle said, “It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.”

Am I the only one who has typed ‘feeling funky’ into Dr. Google at 2 a.m., only to discover I apparently, also have at least three terminal illnesses, a host of rare genetic disorders, and don’t forget hemorrhoids. According to trustmeimadoctor.com, the hemorrhoids likely came from me stubbing my toe on my umbilical cord while in utero, science. Oh, I love the internet!

Health and nutrition are complex sciences; this brings a torrent of contradictory information without taking into account an essential element; every BODY is unique. These complexities are precisely why Dr. Ooze will tell you that eating coconut daily, is the new miracle cure-all, but Dr. Schmooze will say to eat one coconut, ever, will have longterm effects that ultimately lead to a strange but sure death.

Here’s a secret…

The human body is a resiliently designed experimentation lab. If you think Dr. Ooze is right, put your food where your mouth is and test it out. You will know within the first 2 minutes if there is a food allergy, within 2-hours you will know if the food makes you feel uplifted or like you need a nap, by 24-hours you should know if your digestive tract has handled the food well, at 72-hours, you would know if this food is worthy of Dr. Ooze’ praises. To say that coconut is a magical life tonic, you would have to collect this raw data, every day, for the rest of your life. Does this sound sustainable? No, but at least you are adding a healthy new option to your menu, building a raw database.

Want to know if the new fad diet will work for you? Try it.

Want to know which vegan protein shake is going to help you shred in the gym? Try them, every single one, until you see the results you want.

When it comes to food in the name of health, there are no wrong answers. Collecting raw data gives you the ability to decisively and intentionally nourish your body while training you to be aware when the snake oil salesman comes knocking at your door.
