I would like to talk about anxiety. Everyone has felt the feelings of anxiousness at one time or another. But in our modern, fast-paced world it is more prevalent than ever. In fact we have become a culture where anxiety is commonplace. Most of my energy clients, even the school-aged children I work with, share struggles with anxiety. I still remember the first child I began to work with years ago. He was in the second grade. He walked into my office and we began to talk about life. I asked him if he knew what anxiety was. He replied, “Yes, I deal with it every day.”

Woman having an anxiety

I dealt with anxiety as young woman. It affected my digestive system to the point of debilitation. I was always late because I was stuck on the toilet, or stopping on the way to use a public bathroom. Sometimes the anxious feelings were so strong that I didn’t even go to the event. I missed out on the fun because of the discomfort that I didn’t know how to fix. If we were to consider a diagnosis for anxiety it would be: a disorder characterized by excessive worry, uneasiness and apprehension. But in Energy Medicine, we don’t deal with diagnoses. We get to the root of the issue and deal with the energy. Energetically, anxiety is a deep part of you that wants to awaken, come on line and be realized. What if you could shift your mind and realize that experiencing feelings of anxiety actually means you are on the impetus of growth as a spiritual being. Another way to say that is if you’re feeling anxiety, it’s because you don’t really know the magnificent, powerful energetic being that you are. Our world focuses so much on the mind. Most people think that they are the mind and they actually believe everything they think! I would love for you to understand that although the mind is a part of who you are, there is much more to you than your logical mind. And you are here to awaken to that important realization. You can call it energy or spirit. Those terms are interchangeable. Quantum science refers to it as energy and spirituality refers to it as spirit, but they are one in the same. We are spiritual beings and we are here on earth to awaken to that truth. The real question then is...how do we shift the uncomfortable, often debilitating, feelings of anxiety to the realization that there is an awakening wanting to occur from deep within us? And how do we shift the surge of discomfort that we are feeling? I have an answer to that and it is something you can begin doing TODAY. The anxiety response shifts when we begin to breathe low in the belly. The lower lobes of our lungs are full of nerve endings that activate the relaxation response(the parasympathetic part of our autonomic nervous system). When you are feeling anxious you are in the state of fight or flight. With a few deep, slow breaths the body will begin to shift into a calmer state.

The solar plexus is the location of the third chakra. It is your power center. A locked-down power center will hold the low frequency of emotions such as fear, worry and overwhelm. As we activate this part of us, those low-frequency emotions are released.

There are many people who say that they don’t have time to meditate, especially during these stressful holiday months, but there is a Zen proverb that goes... MEDITATION PRACTICE comes in. If you were to set the alarm clock 10 minutes earlier each day and sit with yourself, breathing slowly and connecting to your inner world, you would begin to feel much more in control of your thoughts and feelings. Starting your day connected and in control will stop anxiety before it ever begins.

There are many people who say that they don’t have time to meditate, especially during these stressful holiday months, but there is a Zen proverb that goes…

“Meditate for 15 minutes daily, and if you don’t have the time meditate for an hour.”

Over the next few days and weeks if you were to sit up in bed immediately after you awaken and drop your mind down into your belly and take some slow deep breaths... you could actually transform the feelings and emotions that have become a common part of your morning.

You might have thoughts and feelings that rise as you breathe and if you do, it's OK. Sit with what comes up as a quiet observer. Notice the thoughts, and as you do you will begin to realize that you are NOT the thoughts you think. You may begin to notice that most of the thoughts you think from day to day are the same thoughts. And soon after observing for a while you will begin to realize that the thoughts you think are a CHOICE.

I begin my morning with this simple routine everyday. And I have begun to think…Today will be a wonderful day. I am going to create a day of ease and joy and fun.

We were not born to react to life and get by. We are actually here to decide and create the life we truly desire. I know that it is available for everyone.
