Why The World Needs More Mums Running Home-Based Businesses

As a society, we have made tremendous strides in gender equality, but there is still a long way to go, especially when it comes to Motherhood.

Many mothers struggle to balance their work and family commitments, which can leave them feeling trapped and unfulfilled.

Matrescence; the tug of war between Oxytocin, which draws us to be with our children, and the need for having time for ourselves with an adult conversation where we can find a purpose in life, other than being someone’s snack slave!

One incredible solution to this problem is for mums to start their own businesses from home.

Not only can this provide a source of income and personal fulfilment, but it can also have a positive impact on society as a whole.

The first and most obvious benefit of starting a home-based business is that it allows mothers to work from home while still being able to take care of their children.

By starting a home-based business, mums can be present for their children while still being able to contribute financially to the household or to have some money to invest back into themselves, whether that’s on clothes, learning something or just going out for dinner.

These ‘investments’ are often the first thing to go when we become mothers, whilst in general, fathers still take care of their wants without much thought.

This is incredibly hard for mums who get very little in return for raising the next generation and can sometimes cause resentment in families.

In addition to providing financial security, starting a home-based business can also provide a huge sense of personal fulfilment for mums.

Many mothers have put their careers on hold to focus on raising their children, but that doesn't mean they have lost their ambition or desire to achieve. In fact, the desire to achieve is often heightened, now that they have a child who looks up to them for inspiration in life, as well as the desire to provide the best life possible for them.

By starting a business from home, mums can pursue their passion and use their skills and talents to create something of their own. These skills and talents can often be forgotten thanks to ‘baby brain’, but they’re still there and once found, they can be incredibly empowering and can help mums feel more confident and fulfilled in their roles as mothers, partners, women and business owners.

But why do we need more mums running home-based businesses?

For, probably the most profound reason of them all, they become role models for their children and other women in their community.

By demonstrating that it is possible to balance work and family commitments, mums can inspire other women to pursue their own ambitions and break down gender stereotypes.

This can help create a more inclusive and equal society where women can achieve their full potential.

Moreover, home-based businesses can have a positive impact on the local economy.

When mums start home-based businesses, they often rely on local suppliers and service providers, which can help support small businesses in the community.

Additionally, as these businesses grow and expand, they may be able to create jobs for other members of the community, which can help stimulate economic growth and development.

In addition to the economic benefits, home-based businesses can also have a positive impact on the environment.

By working from home, mums can significantly reduce their carbon footprint by eliminating the need to commute to work every day.

This can help reduce traffic congestion, air pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Additionally, as home-based businesses often rely on digital technology and communication tools, they may be able to reduce their paper usage and waste, further reducing their impact on the environment.

Of course, starting a home-based business is not without its challenges. Mums who choose to start their own businesses will need to be disciplined, organised, and self-motivated in order to be successful.

They will also need to have a solid business plan and be prepared to invest time and resources into their venture.

However, with the right mindset and support, mums can overcome these challenges and achieve their goals.

One way to get started is to connect with other mums who have already started their own home-based businesses.

There are many online communities and support groups for mumpreneurs, where mums can share their experiences, ask for advice, and learn from each other.

Additionally, as a More than Mum business coach, helping mums turn their passions into profit, I can provide guidance and support as they navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship within a like-minded community.
