How Unhealed Trauma Affects Your Business

Trauma is a condition that occurs when an event or circumstance overwhelms you, causes you physical pain or emotional and mental suffering. The type of experience is irrelevant to the brain - as complex an organ may be - the brain doesn’t know the difference between low-level and high-level trauma.


It’s just - trauma.


And, no one can escape it.

This means, if you’re still healing from the bully in 3rd grade who stole your ice-cream or you’re suffering from the death of a pet, there is no hierarchy. Your brain files it off as trauma.


Not only can trauma lead to mental and physical health conditions, such as depression or heart disease, it can also affect how successful you are in your business due to the largely unconscious impact.

Some of my previous clients had four things in common when it came to how trauma affected their business:

  • They avoided making new connections due to lack of trust

  • They were irritated easily when interacting with strangers, clients or prospects.

  • The thought of having sales conversations caused them stress or anxiety.

  • They avoided hosting live events due to lack of self-esteem or low confidence.


Making connections and sharing your expertise is a vital part of growing your business.


We can’t deny that the online space is dominating how we currently run our businesses. Whether it’s a service-based or product-based business. This means, we are susceptible to experiencing triggers stemming from unhealed trauma that may influence how we show up, not only for ourselves and our clients, but also for our business.


And, although you might be an ambitious goal-setter - deciding to push to the back burner all the trauma you will “one day” attend to - your unconscious mind will evidently create a barrier that will prevent you from achieving your goals.


Here are a few ways you can begin healing your trauma.


  1. Awareness is the first step. Notice your triggers. If you find yourself getting irritated at the slightest of things, take note of it and then, get to the root cause.

  2. Ask yourself, what is causing this trigger on a deeper level?

  3. Then, reprogram the trigger by changing the memory into a new memory. (This is a great opportunity to reprogram your unconscious mind.)

How to Reprogram Your Memory:


Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.


Revisit the experience in as much detail as you can.


Notice any heaviness or pain in your body such as a tightness in your chest or your heart-beat accelerating.


In your minds’ eye, restructure the memory to reflect what you wish would have happened instead.


Take a moment to embrace all the emotions that may arise from this reprogramming.


Then, say out loud:


I forgive myself and _________ for _____________. It is safe for me to be myself. It is safe for me to connect with others. It is safe for me to be a successful business owner. I am amazing at what I do. I am loved. I am confident. I open myself to healing my trauma in this timeline, all timelines, in this reality and all realities and remove it from my DNA in this dimension and across all dimensions of space and time.
