Given the experience of being in the workplace for over 20 years, it can be challenging to see the long road to career success through various organizations. The common theme of start and go within two years in the workplace makes it hard to see a meaningful career path to follow. Dream roles still exist in the workplace. It takes time to develop a real sense of what this organization means to you and where you see yourself in 5 years in that current place or a different industry. Like the popular saying, “Where there is a will then there is a way’’. However, not everyone understands this concept when it pertains to landing that dream job.

In light of the ever-so-changing shifts in the workplace, you can still get ahead by making your career goals clear even if you feel stuck with your current role. Nothing is out of reach unless you want it to be. It’s ideal to have a plan that can be implemented the right way without hurting others to get to the top. Therefore, you must be ready to move steadily and consistently.

Here are five strategies that can be adapted to achieve a distinguished role in your dream industry or current workplace:

1. Be open to learning more about the role you desire.

  • What research have you done about that role? Set aside time to learn about any certifications that are required and start working on them. Making small efforts will help you feel more excited to land that role. Being proactive is the key.

2. Have assertiveness in what you want to achieve in life and write out your career goals.

  • Having a journal of your written desires really helps to stay focused on the action plan it will take to achieve that goal.

3. Remember that persistence is the key to success.

  • Your action is the driver. If you have a plan, then it will take persistence to keep that plan moving forward to your desired outcome.

4. Focus on bringing more of your skills and creativity to the role that you desire.

  • Do your current skills and talent match well with the desired role? Is there a skill set that you can improve on to go to the next level? You have natural talents that should not be set aside but added to.

5. Learn from the experience of others who held your desired role.

  • Do you have a current mentor in the workplace or do you know anyone that is doing that desired role? It is important to learn to ask questions. It’s about gaining valuable insights.

It’s not enough to say you want that job. You have to take action and ignore the feelings of doubt. At one point, you used to be excited about your current role, but now you are at a standstill and ready for that change. Getting a head start with these simple strategies can get you on the road to your dream role. The time is now.
