In my glory days, I threw a drop-curve that fell off the table and onto the floor. We’re talking softball, by the way.

A woman softball pitcher

Not sales pitches. (But we’ll get there.)

This nasty pitch had two-plane movement, which means it moved up and down and side to side. If it didn’t strike a girl out, she’d usually hit a weak ground ball that was easy to field and make an out.

Two-plane movement is essential for all pitchers, but it’s especially paramount for “smaller pitchers.” When I say “smaller,” I mean any female pitcher under 6 ft and/or under 200 lbs.

Two-plane movement doesn’t necessarily require speed or strength. It does require grit, control and sometimes creativity.

In marketing, online content, sales, email marketing and pitching, there’s something to be said about being fast and robust. Being the expected winner is an advantage.

But solopreneurs and small businesses have an edge too. It’s two-plane movement.

It’s the ability to dig a little deeper and pull something unexpected out. It’s not being the strongest or the biggest, but the craftiest.

The equivalent of a two-plane movement pitch, when it comes to online business content, is the powerful ability to connect the experiences you’ve had to the consumer. It can be the difference between success and scratching your head in confusion.

It costs nothing. It only requires grit, control and a little creativity.

The up-and-down movement is finding the connecting points within you.

The side-to-side is turning connecting points into digestible, engaging, palpable content. It can be a podcast pitch, social media copy, or email marketing the trick is to reach out with your story, grab the reader by the collar, and say, “Look, we connect, and I have something really valuable that I can improve your life or business with.”

In other words, the power of your story – the compilation of everything that makes you, you, is your nasty pitch. And it’s not nasty because it’s fast and big. It’s nasty because it’s thoughtful and nuanced.

Your experiences, your problem-solving abilities, your heartache – if you package and deliver that well, with your words, you can compete on any field.

The secret to nailing more pitches and closing more sales (even if you’re the underdog) is two-plane movement.

And two-plane movement is getting a story dialed in and communicated in a way that compels readers to soften, engage and act.
