  • How Non-Violent Communication Changed My Life

Written by Tamara Beydoun (Tawil), Trauma Informed Functional Medicine Health Coach As the founder of Tamara Bey Coaching, I offer somatic trauma informed coaching – a holistic and integrative approach that addresses the mind, body, and spirit of my clients.I am certified by the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, the UK International Health Coaching Association, the International Coach Federation, and the Continued Professional Development. In a past life, I once believed there were only two emotions. Happy and sad. Whilst I was aware of the possibility of these emotions, there were no real feelings attached. I was numb. There was no elated happiness high or chore of carrying the heaviness of sadness. I’d never been taught about emotions or what it meant to truly feel. I only started to truly understand what it meant to feel and the true beauty of the emotional scale, upon discovering NVC. Non-violent communication. A system developed by Marshall Rosenberg, an American Psychologist. A very, very simple system whereby we communicate with others and learn to take full responsibility for how we are feeling. We were given a list of feelings, like a really extensive list. I was familiar with all of the words but I had no idea that such an expansive vocabulary existed purely to describe feelings. As I delved deeper and started my own research, I realised I was fascinated by NVC. In my learnings I discovered, statistically, most adults, when asked about how many feelings they can name, they can name only 3. Socially, as a species, we have a very limited understanding of feelings and emotions. Why was I drawn to NVC? I was struggling to connect authentically with my children, and hoped for a time without constant disagreement. I have three kids, including a set of twins. I felt so disconnected from them and I knew there had to be a better way. The way things had become, felt very misaligned and I decided to take charge. You can apply the four-step protocol of NVC to any situation, like mine with your children, but also with family, friends, business, work etc. The four steps are Observation, Feeling, Need and Request (OFNR). These steps help you to express yourself without judgement, learn to recognise your feelings and needs, and make clear, positive requests. In a scenario where perhaps someone arrives late for a meeting, and you want to express how this has made you feel with ease, begin with the first step. We started with an agreement, we agreed to meet at a certain time and this is a positive thing. The person who you are talking with, has to agree with you. Once in agreement the next step is to express how this has made you feel. No one can tell you how you feel, because you own your feelings. You can simply express why you feel angry and what you need to not feel angry in future. There is no placement of blame, you are just owning your feelings. You do not say this person made you angry, because this would not be true. Behind every pleasant and unfeeling there are needs being and not being met. So behind every unpleasant feeling, there's an unmet need. In NVC, we have a list of needs. In this example, I can express that my need for respect is important to me. So we have gone through three of the four steps: Observation, Feeling, Need and then the last step is I can make a request. A request in this instance could be asking the person to communicate if they are going to be late. This is a very simple scenario and in other scenarios more compassion, and more back and forth could be required. For me, I find that I can always come back to the very simple four step process, this understanding alone is when things began to shift for me. I am so grateful for NVC, for how it has allowed me to welcome any time I am triggered. I can look at my feelings, my reaction and delve deeper. It has allowed me to open up emotionally and somatically, which led me to my somatic certification. Not only did it strengthen and rebuild connections with my family and those around me, but it also enabled me to reconnect to my own body. It wasn’t an instant fix. In the early days, it felt awfully robotic. It took time to adapt, for this new way of being with my feelings to feel natural. Now? I cannot imagine communicating about my feelings in any other way. It truly has been life changing. And the most beautiful thing is that now I hear my children talking to other friends expressing their feelings and needs in this healthier way. Everything at home began to shift, and all of a sudden we had such a large space filled with acceptance, respect, and patience for the other’s feelings. A house filled with compassion. I can fully hold my hands up and say that I went from the type of parent who barks orders, trying to control my kids, to that of a parent who gave my children space to express their own feelings and needs. There were many situations where my children and I would learn this new vocabulary, to start to really understand how to articulate exactly what our needs were and how we really felt. NVC is so powerful, once you know how to use these tools you can’t go back to how you once were. I use it even now, extensively, in my coaching. Particularly with younger people, in their 20s and early 30s, we do a lot of role playing. Whereby they're having to move through the struggle of learning to set boundaries with friends. We literally go through a role play where they have a list of feelings they can express, until it feels comfortable and safe. It’s a fantastic way of empowering the younger generation. Ultimately, as humans, we all crave real connections. However, when we go through life with unmet needs, certain unpleasant feelings are triggered and if we are not able to communicate this in a healthy way, we invite disconnection into our life and resentment. We disconnect, we shut down, we close in and the connection is lost. Whereas if we can open up, even if it’s uncomfortable, it still allows for much deeper connections. We want to be seen. We want to be heard. We want to be understood. We want our needs to be met. And believe me, most of our needs are the same. So ask yourself, are you seeking connection and where are you pushing it away? If you’re longing for beautiful connections in your life and need support to do so, then feel free to get in touch to learn more about my one to one and group coaching services. • From Laughter To Succeeding On My Own Terms – My Journey Balancing Motherhood And Entrepreneurship

Written by Mia Poulsen, Business Coach & Thought Leader Mia Poulsen, thought leader and business coach, is on a mission to ignite the spark in female entrepreneurs, guiding them to craft purpose-driven online businesses. Is it possible to be a dedicated entrepreneur while also raising a family? Yes, if you ask me. I´m managing two thriving businesses while raising four children. But breaking away from societal norms and focusing on personal priorities is vital. Picture this: I'm a 23-year-old new mom filled with dreams and aspirations. But as I embraced motherhood, I stumbled upon a harsh reality. While my male counterparts seemed to climb the career ladder post-kids effortlessly, I encountered roadblocks at every turn. It felt like society was whispering, "Hey, moms can't have a fulfilling career and be a present mom at the same time" Undeterred, I dipped my toes into part-time work, hoping to find fulfillment. Yet, the tasks I faced left me yearning for more. I felt the weight of societal expectations pressing down on me, urging me to fit into a mold that just didn't feel right. But deep within, I knew there was another path – one where motherhood and having a meaningful career weren't mutually exclusive. And so I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey, defying those who said it couldn't be done. But let me tell you, it wasn't all rainbows and butterflies. I faced burnout, failed business ideas, and navigated challenging pregnancies. And just when I thought I'd seen it all, life threw me a curveball – my daughter, Lunah, suffered a severe brain injury just 3 days old. In the face of adversity, I clung to a mantra that became my guiding light: "If not now, then when? If not me, then who?" Balancing the demands of entrepreneurship with my daughter's special needs wasn't easy. I encountered judgment from those who couldn't understand my unconventional approach. I was even verbally made fun of in a huge entrepreneurial community for being too soft in my approach and not profitable enough. However, what they didn't know was that I had built my business with less than 20 work hours a week. But here's the thing—I refused to let society dictate my definition of success. For me, success isn't just about the bottom line; it's about making a meaningful impact and living authentically. So, I made it my mission to inspire other women to chase their entrepreneurial dreams, showing them that they can thrive in both business and motherhood. Fast-forward to today, and I'm running two successful businesses from the comfort of my home office. I've proven that you can have a thriving career while being there for your family—no compromises necessary. • Nourish Your Gut For Whole-Body Wellness

Written by Beanie Robinson, Nutritionist Is a leader in sustainable healthy weight loss, hormonal imbalances; PCOS & IBS. Her personal journey with PCOS left her searching for a natural and holistic way of alleviating her symptoms. If you want to improve your health from the inside out, it's time to start prioritising your gut. That's because the gut microbiome, made up of trillions of bacteria, viruses, and fungi living in your digestive tract, impacts so many aspects of our well-being. From immunity and metabolism to brain health and emotional balance, nurturing this complex ecosystem is key. An unhealthy gut microbiome has been linked to issues like IBS & digestive troubles, food sensitivities, fatigue, autoimmunity and even anxiety or depression. The good news? Simple diet and lifestyle adjustments can optimise your gut flora and set the foundation for a thriving healthy gut microbiome. Implement these 7 research-backed tips to start supporting robust gut health today. Eat a plant-packed diet Fill your plate with a rainbow of fresh vegetables & herbs, low sugar fresh fruits, lentils, chickpeas, beans, nuts & seeds. Plants provide prebiotic fibre that nourish the beneficial bacteria in your gut. Aim to include as many different plant foods as possible, as variety is key for a diverse, resilient microbiome. Enjoy organic animal proteins in moderation if desired, but make plants the star of your plate. Choose whole, unprocessed foods To keep your gut microbes happy and thriving, focus on nutritious whole foods over highly refined processed options. Avoid artificial sweeteners, sugary beverages and processed snacks made with additives like emulsifiers; lecithin. Instead, opt for fibre-rich complex carbs like organic oats, non-starchy veggies, fresh fruit and organic live yoghurt to feed those healthy bugs. Practice mindful eating Don't just wolf down your meals on the run – slow down and engage your senses for better digestion and nutrient absorption. Thoroughly chew each bite at least 20-30 times and take a few long deep belly breaths before eating to relax your body fully. This allows you to better tune into hunger cues and optimally break down foods. Indulge mindfully No need to completely restrict favourite treats – that often backfires into overeating them. Have a small portion of what you're craving alongside gut-friendly foods. A little 70% organic dark chocolate, sourdough bread or fresh pasta won't undo your efforts if the majority of your diet is focused around unprocessed whole foods. Moderation and inclusivity trump total restriction. Actively de-stress Chronic stress disturbs the delicate balance of your gut flora, often enabling unfriendly bacteria to overgrown. Make daily relaxation practices like journalling, yoga, meditation, deep breathing or walking in nature a top priority. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night and have at least 5 days a week alcohol free. Tap into the gut-brain connection The gut and brain are in constant communication via the vagus nerve, a cranial nerve that links the two systems. Poor vagal tone from excessive stress, illness or inflammation can disrupt this cross-talk and its downstream effects on digestion, immunity and mental health. Practices like daily meditation, yoga, eating tryptophan-rich foods and even humming and singing loudly can activate and support vagal function. Fermented foods: your gut's new bff Speaking of nurturing your gut microbiome, one of the most powerful ways to do so is by consuming fermented foods! These probiotic-rich delights have been around for centuries and are finally getting the spotlight they deserve as a key to intestinal health. Fermentation is an age-old technique of preserving foods through the action of beneficial microbes like yeast and bacteria. This process creates amazing foods like tangy kombucha, kefir, zesty sauerkraut, and the Korean dish kimchi. The star appeal (apart from taste) of fermented foods is their probiotic content, teeming with live cultures of gut-friendly bacteria strains like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. When you consume these microbes, they can help populate your gut with robust colonies to support digestion, strengthen immunity and improve nutrient assimilation & absorption. On top of their probiotic potency, fermented foods are nutritional powerhouses. Fermentation helps break down nutrients, making them more bioavailable and easier for your body to absorb and utilise. Many fermented products are loaded with B vitamins, vitamin C, antioxidants and digestive enzymes that boost absorption. Another major perk? Fermented foods are champions of sustainability. The fermentation process preserves perishable ingredients for longer, preventing food waste. It's also incredibly energy-efficient compared to other methods like canning or drying. So enjoying these fermented delicacies means you're doing something good for the planet too! Need some fermented food inspiration? Click here to discover some of my favourite ways to incorporate fermented foods into your diet!
