So, you want to achieve professional success, huh? Well, you're not alone. From gold-medal-winning athletes to top-notch teachers and everyone in between, success is the dream we all share. But here's the truth: success isn't just about luck or overnight miracles. It's about conscious effort and dedication. Yep, you heard that right – effort is the real currency of success in the world of professional development.

A man trap on a bunch of yellow rope

I've heard the rumors too. People saying, "Oh, they just got lucky" or "Success is all about chance." Well, let me burst that bubble for you. Professional success rarely drops into your lap out of the blue. It takes time, dedication, and yes, effort.

Remember the saying, "It took me 10 years to be an overnight success"? Well, that pretty much sums it up for most people in the realm of professional development. Take me, for instance, a professional development specialist. I used to think I could skip the waiting game, that I could fast-track my way to success in the professional world. Boy, was I wrong!

I've always been a hard worker, but I didn't fully appreciate the value of time and experience in the journey towards professional success. It turns out, those two factors are essential ingredients in the recipe for triumph in professional development.

Over the past 30 years, I've given over 3,000 presentations and written a whopping 4 million words. And guess what? I'm a much better speaker and writer now, thanks to the continuous process of professional development through time and experience.

So, what's the moral of the story in the realm of professional development? Success in your professional life isn't about one lucky break. It's about the entire journey you undertake to get there. Think about it: that athlete with a gold medal? Hours of practice and professional development went into that win. The championship-winning team? They committed to excellence over time, honing their professional skills. And parents with well-adjusted kids? Years of effort and dedication shaped those children, in both personal and professional development.

Now, here's the twist: time and experience alone don't guarantee professional success. If you're not constantly learning and improving in your field, you're just repeating the same year of experience over and over again. You're not building a solid foundation for success in professional development.

So, what can you take away from all this in the context of professional development?

Here are some points of wisdom for your development

  • Acknowledge this fundamental truth in the world of winners: Entitlement won't get you professional success; continuous effort will.

  • Brace yourself for the long haul in your professional development journey. Success in professional development takes time and experience. There's no shortcut.

  • Embrace the journey! It's not a burden; it's an integral part of your success story.

  • Here's another nugget: do what you love in your professional life. Success is an elusive beast when you despise your work.

  • To assist you in your professional development journey, consider these CRG assessments, books and online courses. They're your guide to achieving professional success with confidence:

  • Personal Style Indicator

  • Self-Worth Inventory

  • Stress Indicator and Health Planner

  • Values Preference Indicator

  • The Quest For Purpose

Now, let's break it down into a few simple action steps

  1. Remember, effort is the real currency of success in the professional world.

  2. Kick that entitlement attitude to the curb in your development journey.

  3. Realize that success in takes time. Don't fall for the overnight success myth.

  4. Invest your time wisely in your professional development – it's your most valuable asset.

  5. Love what you do; it's a key ingredient for success.

  6. Luck? Nah, it's mostly about the journey! Learn from those who've walked the path in before you.

  7. Enjoy the process in your development journey; it's as important as the destination.

  8. Aim high, but be ready to put in the effort. Big goals require big effort, but the rewards are worth it.

So, there you have it. Success in your life isn't a freebie; it's something you earn with sweat, time, and experience through continuous professional development. But if you're passionate about what you're doing, that effort will be a labor of love. So, go ahead, chase your dreams and enjoy your journey to success and winning!
