Sin No More. If you grew up in the Christian faith as I did, you might recall a story in the Bible when Jesus told a woman to ‘sin no more’. I have always wondered if to sin no more was possible. Was Jesus giving this woman an impossible task? Was she able to not sin? Maybe since it was Jesus speaking to her, she had extra help in changing her lifestyle! Knowing what I know about myself and the propensity of the human family, to sin no more seemed impossible!

The song, ‘Amazing’ by One Eskimo says, “Now there is no sin in anything. And it’s Amazing”! Ever since I heard this song, I stopped thinking about sin. I do not judge myself or others as sinful. And it is AMAZING!

What is Sin?

We have been told to sin is to miss the mark as though we are target shooting with bow and arrow. The question is what is the mark? Is it your morality or mine? Families have been destroyed. Nations have been at war asking this very question.

What if we have been asking an impossible question ever since the human family developed the capacity to create morality?

Imperfect People

We have now learned that generational experiences and emotions are passed along in our DNA to our children. Some of the ways we are created have not been by our choice. The influences of our environment have formed our brains and our reactions. Not all of our choices are morally made.

Haunted

We have all heard the saying, ‘When you know better, do better.’ My mind is often haunted by the times in which I knew better but could not do better. I knew it was not good to yell at my children and yet sometimes my emotions became uncontrolled, and I yelled, not often, thank God but did. I know what dietary choices I should make but sometimes I don't. I could have been braver as a pastor but sometimes I wasn't. I am haunted by these shortcomings. I have figured out a solution.

Life-giving or Life-draining?

The Map of Consciousness in the book, Power vs. Force by David R. Hawkins lists the energy frequency of emotions. Shame (20) is the lowest energy emotion to enlightenment (1000) is the highest. Emotions measuring under 200 are life-draining. These emotions (starting with the lowest) are shame, guilt, apathy, grief, fear, desire, anger, and pride.

Emotions measuring 200 and above are life-giving. These emotions (starting with the lowest) are courage, neutrality, willingness, acceptance, reason, love, joy, peace, and enlightenment.

When I meditate, I read a list of the life-giving emotions I desire to have in my body and my life. When I make choices, I consider whether the choice is life-giving, or life-draining. I live with the consequences. That's it.

I live free from self-judgment! The concept of sin has not entered my psyche for years now, thank God!

I Am Able

Since even when I know better, I am not always able to do better. I created a mantra that helps me accept myself. I simply say, “I am able.” I am as able as I am. At any moment, I am as able as I am, past, present, and future. Period! That's the solution to ‘sin no more’!

Addiction

As a society, I trust we understand that addiction is not a moral issue. Anyone in an addiction cycle or watching a loved one in an addiction cycle will be relieved to remove moral judgment from the picture. I am addicted to coffee, vitamins, and alcohol. I plan to safely maintain my coffee addiction. I am paring down my vitamin use. I have eliminated 99 % of my alcohol use. Addiction is real. Addiction is not a sin.

I Am So Happy To Be Me

The benefit of not thinking about sin is living a life of non-judgment. I am filled with compassion, empathy, and love for myself and others. We have nothing to forgive because we are all doing the best we are able to do. We all have as many chances as we need for our Evolving Soul (our humanity) to heal and grow.

I am so happy to be me! I hope the same for you!
