When I was a teenager, I always wanted to be Frank Sinatra. I was about sixteen and there was some resemblance.

An unusual dream for a refugee kid born in Kazakstan migrating with his family firstly to Germany and then to Australia in 1953, with language barriers and hardships.

The dream to perform became true even if it was only fifteen minutes of fame.

But it was worth every minute, singing with a band, the thrill of applause. I think I knew even then, that I wanted to work with people wether entertaining them or motivating them. The two are not that different.

On the other side I was studying to become a fashion designer with a second dream, to launch my own brand and that also came true. I was still in my late twenties and seeing my creations in the windows of Australian fashion stores was thrilling.

Fashion comes and goes and the next venture happened, when a friend approached me to partner him in a PR company. I said yes, though I new nothing about PR, I started before I was ready.

Coming from a music and fashion career, these were the clients we attracted, music and fashion shows, befriending the right media people and charging our clients for pictures and articles which featured their products. With my musical background I even started writing jingles as an extra service for some clients. Use what you have.

Moving forward again, on a whirlwind trip abroad, I was intoxicated by the swinging sixties fashion look of London, sparking my urge once more to go back into the fashion business and that's exactly what I did on my return to Australia. That time I was ready.

Success followed me, all the way up and then I came all the way down, next!

By then I was married with two daughters and a sudden opportunity came up  to market Health and Nutrition products in Thailand, meaning a relocation, so we took the risk and moved from Australia to Thailand. I wasn’t ready.

A year in the unknown was exciting, so we continued the ride, first living in New York and  then Paris, finally deciding to settle in Rome, where protein shakes were not a sought after commodity, what now?

It was the early days of short term holiday apartment rentals, when landlords in Rome were renting out they're second apartments to tourists.

I saw an opportunity and with my ten words of  broken Italian, I talked my way into managing twenty-five Rome apartments, placing classified ads in Australian newspapers and the holiday makers came.

I bought a Vespa and was scootering all over Rome doing my own check Ins, meeting my clients at the door. The demand grew and now we were marketing in Australia, Europe and America.

We needed more properties, the business was building fast, growing to five hundred apartments throughout Italy, with nine people on staff in our Rome offices. My Italian was much better.

A twelve year stint in Rome and London was calling. We moved to Chelsea in London  and continued expanding the business with holiday apartments in London. Airbnb came along and did it better. I wasn’t ready.

It was time for me to contemplate all these experiences and coaching was the natural next step. It had to be.

This meant back to school, in my early seventies, I needed to pass some tough exams to qualify as a credible coach.

It wasn't easy, it was hard, but I got through and I knew that experience was something nobody can buy, so with my certifications and my experiences, I began to coach at the age of seventy-three and now at eighty I love what I do and I have the story to prove it.

My motto is still, do it before you’re ready.
