Katelyn MacDonald
Mental Health Counselor
Katy MacDonald is a licensed mental health counselor specializing in Perinatal and Maternal Mental Health. As the founder of Andover Therapy Services LLC, Katy dedicates her practice to supporting clients through the complex emotional landscape of the perinatal phase.
Katy’s passion for working in the perinatal and maternal mental health space emerged from her own profound trauma—the loss of her first baby due to an unexpected bacterial infection that resulted in preterm labor and the subsequent loss of her son. This tragedy triggered layers of grief and significant psychological trauma.
Through her experience and personal grief work, Katy came to understand the concept of Matrescence, the transformative changes that occur during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Despite its overwhelming impact on a person and their family, Katy found it bewildering that Matrescence holds little value in American culture, with a lack of education, support, and policies to make this experience more manageable.
In 2021, Katy obtained her Perinatal Mental Health Certification and founded Andover Therapy Services LLC, where she offers specialized, compassionate support for those experiencing complex emotional states on their journey to parenthood. Her therapeutic approach integrates evidence-based techniques such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Ego-Parts work. These methods guide clients toward developing a deeper self-understanding and compassion for the parts of themselves that re-emerge or develop during this vulnerable phase.
In 2023, Katy expanded Andover Therapy Services by hiring other therapists interested in specializing in perinatal and reproductive mental health. This initiative aimed to increase accessibility to trained therapists, elevate awareness of needed policy reforms to support families, and highlight the necessity for culturally competent healthcare professionals. Katy’s efforts focus on reducing maternal and infant mortality rates within communities of color and providing comprehensive support throughout Matrescence and beyond.
